Feeding broodmares & foals with Harmony Premium feeds will ensure both your equine friends are getting everything they need for strong and healthy bodies.
Broodmares and Early Pregnancy:
During early pregnancy your mare’s nutrient requirements are similar to that of a non pregnant mature mare. They should be fed to achieve desired weight gain/loss on an individual basis.
Late Gestation and Early Lactation Mares:
Mares in their third trimester have increased nutritional demands compared to early pregnancy as the fetus enters a rapid growth stage. The nutritional requirements during early lactation increases again to support milk production and foal growth; comparable to a horse in hard to intense work. Mares in late gestation and early lactation often need a diet supplemented with concentrate as well as access to high quality pasture and/or high quality hay (such as alfalfa). The energy and protein requirements of mares after the first three months of lactation decreases as foals start to consume solid food and move closer to weaning. From four months of lactation to weaning, mares can be gradually returned to a diet providing nutrient requirements similar to pre-pregnancy as needed to achieve desired body condition.
Body condition should be evaluated weekly, and diet adjusted accordingly to ensure the mare’s nutrient requirements are being met without undue weight change.
The high palatability and protein content of Harmony Sweet Feed make this performance feed make it an excellent option for pregnant and lactating mares of all ages. We also continue to recommend Harmony Senior Pellets as another great option.
